Mouth Cancer Dictionary

laryngeal cancer: Also called larynx cancer or cancer of the larynx. Not included as a type of mouth cancer, cancer of the larynx usually involves the glottis (the part of the larynx containing the vocal cords).

leukoplakia: A symptom in which thick, white areas form inside the mouth, usually as the result of a persistent irritation (such as alcohol, chewing tobacco or cigarettes).

lip cancer: A form of mouth cancer that occurs on the lips, often as a result of excessive sun exposure.

lymphoma: A form of cancer that begins in the lymphatic system (a part of the immune system). Lymphomas can lead to mouth cancer.

lymph nodes: Also called glands, these structures are an important part of the immune system and serve as points where the body attacks invading organisms. Can be inflamed and swollen from infections, although inflammatory conditions and cancer can also cause them to become swollen.

metastasis: The process in which cancer cells migrate and spread from their original growth sites to new tissues, usually through the bloodstream or lymph system.

mouth cancer: A group of cancers that usually involves the lips and tongue and that sometimes involves the lining of the mouth, gums or floor or roof of the mouth. Tobacco use (smoking and chewing tobacco) is the predominant cause of these types of cancers.

mouth ulcer: A lesion or sore in the mouth with many different causes, ulcers can sometimes be a symptom of mouth cancer.

oral cavity: The mouth.
